The South Island Dragon Boat Championships 2026 will be held on Saturday, 14 February 2026, at
Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel. This premier event is organized by the Aoraki Dragon Boat Association (ADBA) and serves as a major regional qualifier ahead of the national championships.
Event Schedule & Logistics
- Time: The regatta runs from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- Location: Meridian Rowing Centre, 50 Kate Cameron Drive, Twizel.
- Course: Racing typically features 5 marked lanes with the implementation of start pontoons.
- Restricted Access: The Harbourmaster has reserved the area from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on race day; no unauthorized vessels may navigate the lake during this period.
Racing Format & Categories
Based on the championship standards, the event includes the following distances and classes:
- Race Distances:
- 200m (Sprints/Splash and Dash).
- 500m (Standard distance).
- 2km (Long distance turns race, typically involving four laps).
- Race Classes: Competition typically includes Mixed, Women, and Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS) divisions.
- Equipment: ADBA provides “Champion” standard boats, which can accommodate up to 20 paddlers plus a sweep and drummer.
Spectator & Team Information
- Viewing: The public is welcome to watch from the banks of Lake Ruataniwha; food and drink vendors are expected to be on-site.
- Merchandise: Event-specific merchandise is available for collection at the venue for those who pre-ordered through ADBA’s official apparel partners.
- Accommodation: For teams or visitors staying overnight, options are available through Book Twizel or the South Island Rowing facilities, which can host up to 90 guests.
