Prevent. Care. Recover. Improving New Zealand's quality of life

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is a New Zealand government organisation that provides support to people who are injured in accidents. ACC runs New Zealand’s no-fault accident compensation system, which means people can receive help after an injury no matter who was responsible. This cover applies 24 hours a day and includes injuries that happen at work, at home, on the road, or while playing sport. It also covers visitors to New Zealand.

When someone is injured, ACC can help pay for medical treatment, such as doctor visits, physiotherapy, and hospital care. If an injury means a person cannot work, ACC may provide weekly payments to help replace lost income. ACC also supports recovery through rehabilitation services, home or vehicle modifications, and other practical assistance to help people return to everyday activities as safely and quickly as possible.

In return for this support, people generally cannot sue for compensation for personal injury. This approach helps ensure fast access to care and support without the need for lengthy legal processes.

ACC also focuses strongly on injury prevention. It works with businesses, schools, communities, and health providers to reduce the number of injuries across New Zealand. This includes promoting safer workplaces, safer homes, and safer roads, as well as supporting research and education programmes.

ACC is funded through levies paid by employers, employees, and vehicle owners, along with government contributions and income from investments. With staff based throughout the country, ACC plays an important role in New Zealand’s health and social support system, helping people recover from injuries and supporting the wellbeing of communities across Aotearoa.
