From Farm Roots to Business Leadership – The Life of Gordon Handy

Gordon’s story begins on a farm in Fairview, South Canterbury, where he grew up with humble beginnings. His early life was shaped by the rural environment, instilling in him a strong work ethic and a connection to the land. Despite starting with very little, Gordon’s journey led him through Fairview School and Timaru College, setting the foundation for his future endeavours.

Interestingly, Gordon’s path to business was not a traditional academic route. At the age of fifteen, during a career advice session at Timaru College, Gordon realised that conventional schooling wasn’t the right fit for him. Instead, he chose to pursue an apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic, a decision that would prove pivotal. His dedication saw him complete the apprenticeship quickly thanks to long hours and hard work.

By eighteen, Gordon had already taken a bold step into entrepreneurship by purchasing his first business – an agricultural spraying operation. This marked the beginning of a lifelong journey in business ownership. Far from being daunted by the challenges of entrepreneurship, Gordon embraced the opportunity to lead and build something of his own.

His early inclination towards leadership was evident even in primary school, where he took a school project about standing for Prime Minister seriously, hinting at his natural drive to lead and make an impact.

Building a Business Empire: Gordon Handy Machinery Limited

After five years in the agricultural spraying business, Gordon founded Gordon Handy Machinery Limited in Washdyke, Timaru. Starting in 1979, this business would grow to become a cornerstone of the South Canterbury farming economy for nearly four decades.

Gordon’s deep knowledge of farming and machinery, combined with his passion for John Deere products, positioned his business for success. At the time, there was no John Deere dealer in Timaru, so Gordon, along with his father, secured the agency for the region. This was just the beginning. Over the years, Gordon expanded his reach, acquiring dealerships in Oamaru, and then making a bold move to purchase four more dealerships across the West Coast, Nelson, Blenheim, and Kaikoura.

This expansion was not without its risks. Gordon recalls the moment vividly when he decided to buy out his father’s share of the business to protect him from the financial risks involved. This decision marked a turning point, as Gordon took full responsibility for the growing enterprise.

One of the biggest lessons Gordon learned during this time was the importance of seeking advice and building a strong network. He established a board of directors that included family members and trusted business professionals, which provided invaluable guidance and support. His advice to anyone starting a business is clear: never be afraid to ask for help and surround yourself with the right people.

Overcoming Challenges and Thriving Through Change

Running a business of this scale was not without its challenges. Gordon acknowledges that growth brings immense pressure – on resources, people, and operations. There were moments when the weight of it all seemed overwhelming, but resilience and support from his network helped him navigate tough times.

Economic downturns, such as the difficult 1980s, tested the business’s endurance. Gordon shared a striking example: in one year, they sold 28 tractors, only to sell two the following year. Managing cash flow during such a drastic drop was a challenge, but the agricultural foundation of the business provided a buffer. Farming, after all, is essential, and farmers need reliable equipment to keep producing food.

Gordon’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and strategic thinking. His ability to weather economic storms while continuing to grow the business is an inspiration to entrepreneurs everywhere.

Community Projects and Giving Back – Gordon’s Impact Beyond Business

Gordon’s contributions extend far beyond his business achievements. His passion for community development and preservation of local heritage has seen him take on numerous leadership roles and projects that benefit South Canterbury.

Championing Community Facilities

One of the standout projects Gordon is proud to have managed is the St John’s building on Wai-iti Road in Timaru. This facility, funded entirely by local community donations accumulated over decades, serves as a vital training and operational center for St John Ambulance services in the region.

Gordon was deeply involved in bringing this vision to life as the project manager, ensuring the building was constructed by local builders and remains a valuable asset for the community. The trust that enabled this project was established back in 1952, and it’s a shining example of how patient, collective community effort can create lasting infrastructure.

Additionally, Gordon recently project-managed the Geraldine Medical Centre, another community-driven initiative supported by both Geraldine and Timaru locals. This medical center has enhanced healthcare access in the area, further demonstrating Gordon’s commitment to projects that improve the quality of life in South Canterbury.

Heritage Preservation and Future Visions

Gordon is also involved in the restoration and repurposing of the historic DC Turnbull building. He envisions transforming this beautiful old structure into a heritage-style hotel, blending preservation with practical reuse. This project reflects Gordon’s broader interest in maintaining South Canterbury’s rich history while fostering economic development through tourism and hospitality.

Another critical project Gordon is championing is affordable worker accommodation in the Mackenzie region. Recognizing the growing need for suitable housing for workers, especially during colder months, this initiative aims to provide comfortable, affordable places for people who might otherwise be living in cars or inadequate conditions. Working alongside local councils, Gordon is navigating the challenges of this project with determination, knowing its importance for the region’s workforce and economy.

Why South Canterbury is the Ideal Place to Live, Work, and Build a Business

Throughout his life and career, Gordon has remained steadfastly committed to South Canterbury. His reasons for staying and investing in the region are rooted in both practical advantages and an emotional connection to the community.

A Thriving Rural Economy with Strong Agricultural Roots

One of South Canterbury’s greatest strengths, according to Gordon, is its close relationship with agriculture. Being a rural town surrounded by farming communities means the local economy is anchored by food production, which brings stability and ongoing demand for services and products.

Gordon points out that agriculture provides a buffer against economic downturns that might hit larger urban centers harder. Farmers need tractors and equipment, and when machinery breaks down, local workshops and dealerships like Gordon Handy Machinery are essential. This steady demand keeps the town’s economic engine running even during tough times.

A Supportive and Connected Community

Gordon emphasises the value of South Canterbury’s tight-knit community. In Timaru and surrounding areas, making a phone call gets you straight to the right person—something less common in larger cities. This accessibility fosters quick decision-making and collaboration.

For newcomers considering relocating to South Canterbury, Gordon assures that the community is welcoming and resourceful. The region offers a network of support services, from legal and financial advice to IT and business mentoring. This environment makes it easier for entrepreneurs and businesses to thrive.

Quality of Life and Regional Advantages

South Canterbury’s location offers a unique blend of natural beauty and convenience. Within a couple of hours, residents can access the sea, ski fields, water skiing spots, and a functioning port. The region’s position as the midpoint of the South Island also provides logistical advantages for businesses shipping products nationwide or internationally.

Gordon sees great potential for South Canterbury to grow as a sports hub for the South Island, with plans underway to develop enhanced sports facilities that could attract national tournaments and visitors. This, combined with ongoing projects addressing accommodation and housing, paints a promising picture for the region’s future.

Opportunities for Growth and Innovation

Looking ahead, Gordon envisions South Canterbury embracing greater diversity in agriculture, including horticulture such as apple orchards, alongside traditional dairy and livestock farming. This diversification will open doors for new business ventures like pack houses and processing facilities, driving further economic development.

He stresses the importance of attracting young people to the region to carry forward the momentum of growth and innovation. Supportive networks, affordable land, and a collaborative business environment make South Canterbury an ideal location for startups and growing enterprises. As President of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, he plays a key role in strengthening the local economy and championing the success of local businesses.

Words of Wisdom for Emerging Entrepreneurs

Gordon’s decades of experience have yielded valuable insights for anyone embarking on a business journey. His top advice is simple yet powerful: never be scared to ask for advice.

“It’s the same problems that you have as a small business as what we have with a big business. The problems are a bit bigger, but they’re very much the same issues. A lot of times we’ve been there and done that. So never be frightened to ask for advice, and do it early. It’s there. It’s easy. And it does make a difference.”

He also emphasises the importance of leadership and surrounding yourself with the right people. A business owner’s role is to guide and encourage their team while recognising that no one can do everything alone.
